this is pretty amazing. i do have a question though if someone doesn't mind giving me a hand. i've been working with photoshop for a long time, but not in the way of creating graphics like this from scratch. this is a completely new subject to me.

i am on part 2 - step 7. the wording seems weird to me, so i'm going to repeat exactly what i've done up until this point. i created the background as described with only slight complication. as for the head, i marked the 2 guidelines as described. after this i created the elliptical with the size described, locked it center, then created a new layer above the background in which to fill white. i did this because it seemed more feasible than to fill in the background even though the tutorial did not say to. i hit ctrl-j on my keyboard and named the uppermost layer head 02, and the layer below as head 01. i hid layer head 02, selected layer head 01 then followed the next step for the shadow, bevel and emboss, and the gradient overlay.

now comes the part where i get confused and lost. it says "open the layer head 02"... open what? well i didn't know so i took a guess and i unhid the layer, sized me a new elliptical with the size described, selected layer head 02, and cut the ellitical out of the center, right, and left so that the shape shown on the tutorial is left, HOWEVER what is shown in the picture does not look like mine. my "remaining top and bottom pieces" are flat white. the ones in the picture are 3 dimensional. what is the missing step to modify layer head 02?

i very well may be missing something, but i've been going over this several times for a while now with no headway. i'm very interested in learning the techniques posted here, but i'm having a hard time following some of the steps listed. i'm currently deployed to iraq and am 9 hours ahead of central time, so it may take a short time for me to respond. i would really appreciate any help on this subject. and i definitely appreciate the outstanding job on the tutorial!

sade was from thailand so her english was sometimes hard to understand.. ive never done the tut but ill try to help ya out here as much as possible..

when she said open layer head 2, i think she meant select it and unhide it like you did

as for the solid white and flat.. if you scroll down a little youll see a picture with settings head 02 ( this one: http://www.whoredcanvas.net/forum/tutorials/ikat/6awl6.jpg )

have you added those settings to that layer?

im at work atm, but ill have a closer look for you when im back home

well here i am feeling lost again. i tried messing around with some stuff about my last post and made something similar. but i absolutely can't figure out anything near to what i need to do for part 2 steps 12 and 13. i got the new layer with the white rectangle. but after that, i'm lost as to how the listed selections are to be made, etc. i've tried a combination of many different selections that i thought were similar to the listed instructions, but it turned out nothing like it. i hate to be such a newb and keep asking questions, but i'm really interested in the techniques described here and would really like to learn them. well it's bed time here. thanks again for any help.

if you cant make the selection all at ones like she did.. just delete the parts one by one.. make a square selection of 10 pixels like she did press delete button and move it up a few notches.. then repeat that a few times

then make the round selection in the middle.. and press delete

then make the round selection of the outher ring.. inverse the selection so youll delete the outsides instead of the insides.. and press delete

it should remain you with the same blocks she has.. and ya can apply the settings

well i've been learning a lot about creating images from scratch with photoshop. i still can't make this picture exactly, but i'm glad i was able to get some of the techniques down. thanks so much for the tutorial and the help yesterday. hopefully i can make my imagination work for me so that i can put these techniques to use!
