How to Make Web 2.0 Neon Sign Text

Learn to design a neon sign with web 2.0 colors on a textured background.

1. First, create a new palette with a black background and a size of 350x200 pixels.

2. Next, select the color white for your font and click the "Horizontal Type Tool" using the (Futura Lt BT) text and type your text on the palette with a text size of "48" pixels and "Sharp" anti-aliasing.

3. Right click the "Text Layer" and select "Blending Options" or click on Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options to open and set your blending like the images below. We will be using the Flickr color pink "FF0084" for our neon glow.

6. Now, you want to use a texture which will look good behind your neon logo. You can use the slate texture image below simply by right click on the image and saving it to your hard drive or we have the full size slate texture image available to download which is 2559 pixels by 1866 pixels.

7. Open the image above in Photoshop and click on Edit > Define Pattern so you can use it for your background and name it to something which will describe it.

8. Next, right click the "Background Layer" and select "Blending Options" or click on Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options to open and set your blending like the images below. You will be adding the slate texture background you just defined as a pattern and click "OK".

9. Create a new "Brightness / Contrast Adjustment Layer" by clicking Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast and set the "Brightness" to (-85) and the "Contrast" to (-45) for this tutorial.

10. Now you will create a new Hue / Saturation Adjustment Layer. If you picked a different neon color, simply slide the Hue until you find the hue that matches. Click on Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue / Saturation and set the properties like the image below.

11. Your final image should look like the one below.
